Awesome Andamans - on the bamboo crafts of andamans
Bamboo is available in abundance in the Andamans. Cane, too, is present in large quantities. Other natural raw materials like Coconut, Palm, etc make an excellent ecosystem for nature-inspired crafts to thrive in the Islands. Cane and Bamboo Work is done majorly by settlers from Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, who are now natives of the Union Territory. They are capable of making exquisite bamboo-crafts, matching designs that are provided to them or asked for. Attractive hole cane baskets made out of thin and unsplit cane twigs are used by women for shopping and storage purposes. A cheaper type is used by labourers engaged in construction work. The total number of artisans engaged in cane and bamboo work in the Andaman is estimated at about 50.
